Prolonged Survival

People with DMD are now living much longer than many medical professionals had originally expected. With age comes various other issues that do not affect most people.

Respiratory and cardiac care are of utmost importance, because respiratory failure and heart failure are the main causes of death for people with DMD. There are many treatments and therapies available to deal with these issues.

Early interventions will be necessary to help as a person with DMD ages. These include Physical and Occupational Therapy, wheelchairs, braces and surgery. Other issues that will likely need adressing are digestive and bowel problems, medical issues (both specific to DMD and not) and psychological and social issues.
