Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO)

E-mail Print PDF

Two different types of AFO are commonly used with Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy.

Fixed Ankle-Foot Orthosis (FAFO)Fixed Ankle-Foot Orthosis (FAFO)

FAFOs are designed to offer maximum stability and support to the ankle foot complex. They resist all movement by holding the foot in the position that it was cast in. FAFOs are most commonly made of plastic resins, such as Polypropylene, Homopolymer and Subortholon.

This type of AFO is often prescribed for nighttime use early after diagnosis.

Hinged Ankle-Foot Orthosis (HAFO)Hinged Ankle-Foot Orthosis (HAFO)

HAFOs were developed to overcome the problems created by using FAFOs. A simple hinge lined up with the anatomical ankle joint allows the foot to dorsiflex1 freely while controlling planterflexion2 and lateral movements of the ankle and foot. HAFOs are most commonly made of Polypropylene or Homopolymer resins.

HAFOs are used for some people with DMD to wear during the day, as they allow for some natural movement of the ankle while providing the support and stability of the FAFOs.

  1. Flexing of the ankle joint resulting in the top of the foot moving toward the body.
  2. Extension of the ankle resulting in the forefoot and toes moving away from the body.
