As the name suggests, KAFOs extend from the proximal thigh over the knee and incorporate an AFO section. KAFOs may also be referred to as long leg braces or cosmetic calipers. The specific shape of the various sections is dependant on the needs and condition of an individual. Greater control is possible because of the 'intimate' contact of the plastic structure. Supportive, corrective forces can also be applied more easily and comfortably, because of this structure. Research advances in joint design means the various motions in knee flexion and extension can be mimicked and controlled to improve the gait pattern. They are made of similar materials to those of AFOs.
KAFOs are used for a variety of conditions, including Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and are usually prescribed for use later in the disease.
