Surgery

Although there is no cure for DMD, the disorder's impact can be changed significantly by keeping the body as flexible, upright and mobile as possible. This is accomplished with a combination of physical therapy, bracing, use of a wheelchair and surgery. Surgery may be required to counteract contractures and scoliosis.

IMPORTANT: Anesthesia can cause certain respiratory complications. It is important to discuss these with your doctor, surgery and an anesthesiologist before proceeding. Please see the Respiratory Page and the Medical Issues Page for additional information about this topic.
