About Carol Lee Webb PhD

Dr. Carol Lee Webb is a Ph.D. who graduated June 7, 2002. She has allowed DMDPioneers.org to make her dissertation available.

Carol's family is ordinary for the most part. Her husband is a former military career officer and they have two grown children. Their oldest, Phil 27, was diagnosed with DMD 24 years ago. Later, they discovered that he also had specific learning disabilities. Their daughter, Meredith is 22 and physically healthy.

Phil is now a graduate student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln studying geographic information systems (GIS). He lives on his own in a dorm that has been adapted for students with disabilities. Phil is on the BMD end of the DMD/BMD spectrum so he has progressed more slowly but just as relentlessly as those on the DMD end. Phil got his first wheelchair this past December and also began using home health care workers to help him with grooming tasks and other self-help skills.

Carol chose to write her doctoral dissertation based on parents’ perspectives about living with DMD/BMD and specific learning disabilities (SLD) because 24 years with MDA and three years with PPMD have made her believe people with DMD and their parents are the experts.
