Parents' Perspectives on Duchenne/Becker Muscular Dystrophy and Specific Learning Disabilities: A Grounded Theory Study
By Dr. Carol Lee Webb

Carol Lee Webb writes her Ph.D. dissertation on DMD/BMD as they relate to specific learning disabilities (SLD). The paper provides a wealth of information and is full of valuable references. If you are having trouble getting appropriate services and programs from your school district, you will find Carol's (or we should say, "Dr. Lee's") paper especially valuable.

The paper is about 170 pages when printed, therefore we have provided two versions for downloading or viewing online. Either as a zipped Microsoft Word file (requires unzipping software, such as WinZip) or three PDF files (requires FREE Adobe Reader). Click on the desired file below:

This study is a forerunner to her proposed book on coping strategies for parents by parents. To provide the necessary input, all parents of children with these conditions are invited to e-mail Carol with answers to the following questions:

  • Describe the diagnosis and your reactions as a family.
  • Tell how you cope with the lived experience of DMD/BMD.
  • Tell how you cope with the lived experience of SLD.
  • What advice can you offer others?

We would like to thank Carol for allowing us to make her dissertation available on the DMD Pioneers website. We wish her luck with the proposed book and encourage all families to take the time and write to Carol about their experiences.
